The apartment block was 16 storeys high and the lift was broken. Undeterred we climbed to the roof for some superb views out over Pripyat. It was from the roof that we realised how close the city was to the reactors of the power plant. From the roof the city looked like it had been dropped into the middle of a dense jungle. The kindergarten was particularly moving as we explored rooms that still had toys in them and names of children that would now be the same age as us. What were they doing now? Where were they? It left us in a very quite and contemplative mood.
