Other units that were based at the airfield at this time, and beyond, were:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>No 7 Air Observers School (17 May 1943 &#8211; 15 Feb 1944)<\/li>\n<li>No 12 Air Gunners School (1 Aug 1943 &#8211; 31 May 1945)<\/li>\n<li>No 7 (Observers) Advanced Flying Unit (15 Feb 1944 &#8211; 31 May 1945)<\/li>\n<li>No 7 Air Navigation School (31 May 1945 &#8211; 4 Jun 1947)<\/li>\n<li>No 2 Air Navigation School (4 Jun &#8211; 1 Oct 1947)<\/li>\n<li>No 3 Air Navigation School (3 Mar 1952 &#8211; 14 Apr 1954)<\/li>\n<li>No 671 Volunteer Gliding School (22 Jan 1959 &#8211; Sep 1962)<\/li>\n<li>No 664 Volunteer Gliding School (Feb 1987 &#8211; 31 Oct 1990)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Later however, the base was also part of the ROTOR radar project, and in 1955\/56&#8217;s a Control Centre\u00a0was established on the flying field with a remote radar head at Killard Point. This had a joint military\/civilian role albeit using the same physical radar. The RAF\u00a0where responsible for monitoring the skies in the Atlantic sector for attack from the Russians, while the civilian operators were responsible for monitoring high flying\u00a0aircraft (above 25000ft) ensuring adequate height and separation for the cross atlantic flight paths. In the mid 1960&#8217;s (certainly after 1964)\u00a0the site gained a type 84 radar (that was relocated from RAF Bawdsey) and became a Master Radar Station responsible for the atlantic area.<\/p>\n<p>Over the years the radar station was equipped with the following radars:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>a Type 7 GCI Radar on the airfield. (superceded by the Type 80)<\/li>\n<li>a Type 80 CEW\/GCI Radar at Killard Point<\/li>\n<li>a Type 13 Height Finder at Killard Point<\/li>\n<li>a Type 14 CHEL\/GCI Radar at Killard Point<\/li>\n<li>AN-FPS6 Height Finders at Killard Point<\/li>\n<li>HF200 Height Finders on the airfield<\/li>\n<li>a Type 84 Radar on the airfield (installed after 1964)<\/li>\n<li>a Type 93 Mobile Radar on the airfield until 1989<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In the post ROTOR period a Control and Reporting Post was built on the airfield under the LINESMAN\/MEDIATOR program.(it is now the racecourse HQ). CRP&#8217;s were surface built and CRC&#8217;s were underground.\u00a0A CRC was established at\u00a0Boulmer\u00a0with CRP\u2019s at Portreath, Faeroe Islands,\u00a0Saxa Vord\u00a0(Shetlands), Benbecula (Hebrides), Bishopscourt (Northern Ireland), Staxton Wold (Yorkshire) and Ty Croes (North Wales). The hierarchy of the radar setup was as follows:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Sector Operations Centre (SOC) e.g. <a href=\"https:\/\/thetimechamber.co.uk\/beta\/sites\/military\/rotor-radar-stations\/raf-neatishead-r3-and-r12-gci-rotor-sector-operations-centre-norfolk\">RAF Neatishead<\/a>,<\/li>\n<li>CRC&#8217;s and CRP&#8217;s,<\/li>\n<li>Mobile radar units<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The site was closed in 1978, and the remote head and R8 building at Killard Point was removed and the area returned to a greenfield site, of which precious little remains to be seen today. The RAF continued using the main site and in 1982 installed new mobile radars. However by the late 1980&#8217;s the decision was taken to close the whole site and and by 1991 it was put up for sale. The\u00a0runways are still extant, and the land surrounding them is now used for agriculture. The CRP is still extant and is now the HQ of a motor racing company who have built a motor racing circuit on part of the old airfield. Various remnants remain, e.g. the type 84 transmitter and receiver building (R17), and surrounding support structures are extant but quite derelict, although some nice remains of radar equipment exist inside, the rest of the buildings are either empty or used for the farmers storage. Various plinths for height finders can be seen around the vicinity, and some of the original security fence still exists. In 2003 Ryanair considered the possibility of purchasing the airfield and creating an airport but these plans didn&#8217;t come to fruition.
