With the passing of the care in the community act in the 1980’s, many of these institutions have since closed; only a few of them remain open and in the use for Mental Health services. This list was first compiled by Dr. Jeremy Taylor for his definitive publication Hospital And Asylum Architecture 1840-1914, and then updated by both Simon Cornwell and Peter Cracknell.

The list comprises of all known Asylums in both England and Wales, the Scottish list is to come. The online mapping tools, Bing Maps, has been used to provide a link to the hospitals locations through the county listing, any photographs of an Asylum can be followed through a hyperlink on the Hospital name.

There is also a Google Earth File detailing the location of the asylum around the UK and Ireland, or it can be viewed at Google maps, here.
