The nurses badge was awarded to all student nurses who successfully qualified from training at Cane Hill. The hospital's motto that can be seen on the badge, Aversos Compono Animos, translates to 'I bring relief to troubled minds'.
The nurses badge was broken down into four sections, the top left section is derived from the London County Council crest, who were responsible for the hospital for 50 years. The top right section is a segment of the logo of the RMPA, the college and administrative body for Mental Nurse Training, the bottom left section represents the Surrey Downs, where Cane Hill was situated. The bottom right section is the Southwark cross, this being the most prominent borough that Cane Hill received patients from.
The nurses badge was presented to the Committee in 1951 by the superintendent Alex Walk, in his attempt to improve the image of the hospital. The design was accepted without compromise by the committee and was used on the cover of Annual Reports, and throughout the hospital.
